Brisbane Trip Day 15: Brisbane

We all had a good sleep and woke up happy to be where we are. One of the boys cooked us breakfast - chicken fillets and kievs, quite tasty. The kids watched Netflix and played Minecraft and Terraria, I chatted to my friend and organised some of my stuff. We all played with the kittens on and off.

Late morning I headed to Frew Park, near the city, with my kids and 2 of the others. There's a park there that's really great for older kids, lots of parkour options and fun things to climb and slide on. The kids played and I met up with a school friend - I'd seen her at our 20 year reunion (Amelie was a baby and my friend was pregnant with her first) and before that not since the late 90s. She had her 3yo with her and he played while we talked. My friend and I went up to the cafe for a light lunch, and my host friend arrived with her other kids (and food for all the kids). It was a very enjoyable few hours, catching up with my school friend and getting to meet each other's kids. The kids all really enjoyed the playground too.

My friend left to pick up her son from school, then my host friend and 2 of her kids left to go to dancing. The rest of us played a bit longer then drove home. The traffic made it a much longer trip as there was school traffic then peak hour. I'd never driven in Brisbane before and I'm enjoying getting to know my way around. Back at home the kids played on the trampoline, played with nerf guns, watched Full House, played Minecraft, played with the kittens and relaxed. I organised some music and apps on my phone and iPad and played games on the couch. The girls did some gymnastics on the trampoline. It was hot and humid but a very relaxed evening. My friend came home quite late and we chatted briefly before everyone headed off to bed.

Brisbane Trip Day 14: Gold Coast -> Brisbane

Another early morning for me and I sat on the balcony using the computer. The kids eventually stirred and we ate chocolate croissants and donuts for breakfast. Tony FaceTimed us - with Winky (the cat) on his knee looking healthy and happy - she'd been missing for a couple of days and it was a massive relief to see her. I'd been having such a good time and also feeling bad that I was so happy while the cat had potentially disappeared. I had a shower then packed while the kids watched some YouTube videos. I was all packed up before 9.30 - it's so much easier when it's just our stuff and not the tent as well! I took one load of stuff down to the car, then got some ice for the eskies (there was an ice maker in the corridor) and loaded myself and the kids up with another load to take to the car. The kids sat in the foyer and I asked the concierge to bring down the rest of the luggage, then I went and checked out. When our luggage arrived I went to get the car, and loaded it all in. I moved the car back down to the carpark near the trailer and headed back inside.

We headed back through the gift shop and up to the monorail station - Amelie was excited to finally get to go on the monorail. We did one circuit around SeaWorld and enjoyed seeing everything again, and it was fun seeing it from that perspective. Back at the resort the kids sat in the foyer while I went down and hitched up the trailer. It was SO hot - mid 30s at least, and very humid. I'm glad I didn't have to do a full pack up. The kids came down once I was ready, and we drove out to Paradise Country, the 4th attraction on our unlimited access tickets.

The drive from Wet n Wild to Paradise Country was a longish road with lots of speed humps. We drove through the paddocks holding the horses for Outback Spectacular, that was pretty cool (we'd seen the horses from the top of some of the rides on Monday, that was also cool). I pulled into the carpark and realised that it wasn't a loop and there was nowhere to park the trailer, so I had to back out. I got most of the way then a guy came and helped me with the last little bit. I parked in the 'additional parking' area and managed to find somewhere in the shade that would be easy to get out of.

The walk to the entrance was quite long, sunny and very very hot. Amelie really found it hard and I did wonder if it was worth it. We went in and tried to find a water fountain but there didn't seem to be one. We went down to the animal nursery and fed some goats and sheep, thankfully in the shade, then went into the barn and fed piglets, alpacas, ducks, more lambs and kids. It was fun, especially helping one of the keepers try the piglets on apples.

We decided we'd experienced enough so made our hot way back to the car, and drove back to Wet n Wild. I dropped the kids off and found somewhere to park the trailer - it was a fair way from the entrance but it was, again, in shade. Once inside we parked our stuff on the tables, got into our swimmers and refilled our soft drink cup (we had to pay a reduced amount to reactivate it). Liam and Caitlin went to the wave pool and Amelie and I went to the Junior slides. I did the mini tornado with her, then the mini half pipe, and she did all the other junior slides. One of them she was sitting and sliding slowly down and a kid came barrelling down headfirst behind her and ran into her - he and his parents thought it was hilarious, Amelie wasn't so amused.

We played together on the water playground for a while (I wasn't allowed on the slides there but could climb and walk around). We went into the Junior pool and the other kids came back. Liam and I went on the tube river and floated around once while the girls went on the junior slides again. They met us at the river and jumped in for a circuit as well. It was very refreshing and relaxing.

Amelie wanted to go on Mammoth Falls again, so we headed over there for a fun raft ride down the half pipe. We had a quick swim in the wave pool then back to get dressed again, feeling much cooler than we had been earlier in the day. I'd promised the kids a bucket of soft serve ice cream if we got the chance, so we took it in turns to add ice cream (vanilla, strawberry, chocolate and choc mint) and toppings (caramel, chocolate, lime, and sour worms, jelly beans and gummy bears), refilled our soft drink again, then reluctantly left our last theme park. (We'd thought about going back to Movie World again, but it had been such a perfect day yesterday that none of us really wanted to spoil it). I was impressed on all 4 days, at all 4 parks, at the staff - everyone was friendly and helpful and enjoyable to talk to.

We ate our ice cream as we headed towards Brisbane. The traffic was heavy but was moving the whole way. The ice cream was delicious and the toppings good, but the lollies were a bit much and most didn't get eaten. We saw DreamWorld on our way past and compared some of the rides there to what we'd been doing. There were still no caravans on the road - really odd. As we approached Ipswich we finally did see a caravan being towed - the first one (and no camper trailers) we'd seen since just north of Byron Bay.

We arrived at our friends' house around 4.45pm. My kids and the other kids were so excited to see each other and settled straight into playing on the trampoline and in the backyard. We spent a relaxed evening in and out of the house, watching Netflix, playing with the kittens and playing games. My friend and one of their kids came home from dancing later in the evening - it was so good to see her. The kids set up lots of mattresses in the lounge room and they all slept out there (all 7 of them). I slept in one of the kids rooms after a long long chat with my friend.

Half-lap Day 110: Camperdown -> Home

There was heavy rain overnight and once again we were very grateful to be inside a house. We got up and had breakfast and chatted to our hosts, Millie had a shower and Caitlin made more videos on her iPad. Tony and his uncle had stayed up quite late the night before so Tone had a bit of a sleep in. It didn’t take us long to pack up as we’d brought even less inside this time than the night before – the only time consuming thing was the extremely steep driveway that we needed to walk down and up to get to the car and back (we’d left the car and trailer down on the street, there was no way we could go up the drive with the trailer on).

LiAM in particular was very keen to just get in the car and head home. We were on our way just after 10am, very excited to be on the very last leg of our trip. We drove through the beautiful and familiar countryside around Camperdown, with the stone walls and windmills and cattle and sheep. Driving through the little towns between there and Geelong we saw lots of tractor and harvester equipment. Mainly we noticed how often we came across a town – we’d become used to driving all day to get to the next town, and here they came up every 20 minutes or so.

We stopped near Geelong to get petrol and some hot chips from Red Rooster. The roadhouse was a bit a of a culture shock – the service station, McDonalds, Red Rooster and several other food outlets all shared the same building, and there were SO many people. We got our chips and were happy to be back in the car.

It was raining pretty hard for a lot of the way into and around Melbourne. There was more traffic than we had seen – well, since we’d left. One thing that stood out to us was the low number of caravans – we were used to seeing almost nothing but trucks and caravans, and here it was mainly cars and utes, we only saw 3 caravans between Geelong and the ring road.

Traffic was slow on the ring road, first because of lane merges, and then because of a very nasty looking accident near Sydney Rd. Eventually the traffic cleared and the last 45 minutes flowed easily. On our way we drove nearby several friend’s houses and gave them a wave as we went past.

One by one the kids recognised roads we were driving on and realised how close to home we were. Coming through Christmas Hills it was very exciting to see Yarra Glen spread out on the plain below – really felt like coming home. As we drove through Yarra Glen we noticed lots of houses had been built in the estate they were just starting when we left. It’s cool to live in such a beautiful place too – driving along the road to our house we could appreciate the beauty and not feel so much like we’d left all these fantastic places and now we were just at home – home is fantastic as well.

We arrived home just after 2pm and everyone felt happy and bit of disbelief – we’d made it! We were going to back the trailer in to the carport first so it was in position to unpack – then we saw Buckley and everyone tumbled out of the car to go and pat him. He was excited to see us and we were all so thrilled to see him. We let him come inside with us to check out the house – it looked so neat and familiar and strange and felt much bigger than I’d remembered. We hadn’t been home long when Winky came out to see us. The kids were so excited that she ran straight back in under my bed in fright – but did come out and gave us all a cuddle then hung around with us all afternoon, I think she was pleased to see us too. Later in the afternoon we saw our 3 remaining chickens and the kids reallocated ownership and names (they’ve grown since we left and we weren’t sure which chickens these were – they’ve got new identities now so it doesn’t matter). The mountains that are normally our view were obscured by cloud at first, then the clouds lifted through the afternoon and we could see Mt St Leonards and really felt at home.

We lit the fire, went through our mail, slowly brought things in out of the car and moved things around the house to make it habitable for the 5 of us (I’d put a lot of stuff in the kids’ room so that our house sitter had more space, so I moved some of that back out so that the kids could get to their beds). LiAM and Millie put the PlayStation on and played with their new Skylanders, Caitlin rang her friends to tell them she was home.

It was a lovely, relaxing afternoon and I resisted the urge to rush around trying to get everything unpacked and in place – there’s plenty of time for that and I am going to try very hard to stay relaxed as I have been on the trip. Tony went to get pizza for our Friday night dinner – a great way to celebrate arriving home. While he was out he visited some friends and met their new baby – the kids and I are keen to see her soon too (born while we were away).

Caitlin started working on a photo slideshow of the trip to take to Girl Guides this week, then on tidying up her room – we’ve all got a new perspective on space and belongings I think after living in the tent for so long. Tony watched the football and the others watched some TV, I pottered around and we all felt very happy and comfortable (even though it felt a little weird as well).

Half-lap Day 9: Hahndorf -> Clare

It was nice and warm and dry all night in the cabin – we could hear the wind and rain and were pleased to be inside. When we woke up the sun was shining, everything was wet and there were branches and trees down everywhere, but the wind had died right down.

After breakfast I walked back over to our tent, which was still standing and had a few pools of water at the base of the poles inside. The mattress was also a bit wet. I opened up all the windows and started pulling everything out to dry a bit in the sun before we packed it all up. There were still grey clouds milling around and I was concerned that it would rain on all our drying things, but it held off. Once I had the tent empty I went back over and helped get everything out of the cabin, we returned the key and then started packing up our stuff.  Talking to the staff at reception they said that the Adelaide Hills was the area worst hit by the weather the day before.

The kids played in the games room and Caitlin wandered back and forth between helping, playing with the others, and balancing on the rocks around the campsite. Having the windows open had dried out most of the inside of the tent – we packed it up last (which is the opposite to what we normally do) and it was a relief that it was mainly dry inside at least.

We were ready to leave around midday. Tony dropped the kids and I off in Hahndorf so we could browse the shops like we’d wanted to do the day before. We checked out an op shop and then the fudge shop, all the kids bought some fudge or lollies with their holiday money. We also enjoyed looking at the old buildings and the autumn trees and vines. When Tony joined us Caitlin and I wandered a bit further and also explored an alpaca shop – I bought some alpaca wool insoles for my boots. Once everyone had finished choosing their lollies we headed back to the car for sandwiches. While we had been shopping Tony had taken the trailer back to the auto electrician to fix the plug that joins on to the car – now our blinkers and brake lights work without having to spend 10 minutes jiggling the connection.

We headed in towards Adelaide and then turned north. We listened to the end of Almost Super and were pleased when I looked it up and discovered that the author is writing an Almost Super 2. We used the Fuel app we’d downloaded to find the cheapest fuel on the way out of the city – the price wasn’t as good as the app said, but it was still better than what we’d been seeing on the main highway, and we were able to update it ourselves.

Heading towards Gawler the traffic was quite heavy then suddenly it cleared and our surroundings became less built up. I immediately felt excited and relaxed – it’s like the first week was just a tester holiday, and it was all places we’d been before (or near enough), and now the NEW part of the trip begins. Exploring unknown places and doing things we’ve never done. Also being out of the city always helps me relax.

We drove as far as Clare. The countryside on the way there was different again to anything we’d seen – not many trees, lots of rolling hills cleared for crops. Lots of sheep too. Even driving through areas of gum trees the ground below them was fairly clear, not a lot of undergrowth. Coming in to the Clare Valley was cool, being surrounded by vineyards and reading all the names of the wineries – Tony knew a lot of them, and has met some of the people who work there or run them.

We settled for the night at the Clare Valley Racecourse, just a bit out of town. It’s only $20 for the night, and we can use the jockeys’ toilets and showers in the race secretary’s building, or there’s (not so nice – full of tumbleweeds!) a public toilet block near where we camped. We arrived a bit before 5 so actually set up the tent while it was still daylight, a first for this trip! The kids ran around on the grass and went up the hill to see a horse in a paddock. Caitlin was excited to see the stalls where the racehorses would be stabled on race day. Tony used the large expanse of grass to practice hitting some golf balls.

Once it got dark we had dinner – left over chicken curry in rice paper rolls, very yummy. The kids played inside the tent for a while and we tidied up a bit, then went to bed around 8pm to read Brisingr. After we stopped reading we heard a noise outside, Tony said he thought he’d seen a cat. He and Caitlin went to check – a ginger cat had knocked the lid off our bread tub and was eating our butter! They put things away a bit more securely – then shortly afterwards I could hear purring outside. Caitlin and LiAM went to check, and said ‘yes, the cat is out here – oh wait, there’s 2..no, 3 – oh there’s kittens….’ So it was a mum and 4 kittens, who were purring because they’d found our garbage bag and were licking the sour cream lid we’d thrown out… So we tidied up even more securely (I don’t know how they got to the garbage, I thought we’d put it away) and things were quiet from that point.

Sydney Trip - > Day 5 to Day 10

Over the rest of our time in Sydney, we spent a lot of time hanging out at the house, as well as a few outings, which made it feel more like a holiday (less like being at home). On the Friday afternoon we took all the kids to Sydney Aquatic Centre at Homebush - Millie's favourite pool and somewhere she's been wanting to go back to for months. We were there for about 4 hours, swimming in the kids pool and going in and out of the fountains and tipping buckets and showers, going around and around and around in the rapids, hanging out in the spa, going on the big slide (Millie is still not tall enough, but there were plenty of other things to do to keep her happy), and running over to be dumped on by the massive bucket of water. Millie and I usually keep well away from it, by the end of this visit though she was running over with everyone else to be there for the massive wave of water. I did it once and was happy to not do it again.

On Saturday the other kids had karate and a rehearsal and other things on, and we went to Lizard Log park which has a great adventure playground, and spent 3 hours hanging out with my friend K. Her kids weren't around this weekend, so my kids played and K and I had a great chat in between helping my kids. LiAM wasn't feeling well so he didn't enjoy the playground as much as he'd hoped. It was a wonderful catch up. And warm - the first time I've been able to be outside without a jacket for many months now! On the way home we had an early dinner at Red Rooster, then home for a quiet evening with the others.

Sunday we headed in to Balmain to see my brother and his wife. We had a BBQ lunch sitting on their balcony overlooking the harbour, it was another beautiful sunny day and a great setting. After lunch we walked to the ferry and they took us over to Cockatoo Island - somewhere I'd never been and was very excited to visit. We wandered through one of the tunnels, examined the old cranes and railway tracks and docks, sat in the sun and ate ice cream, climbed up to the top part of the island and looked at the old sandstone buildings. On the way back to the ferry Millie fell and hurt her knee, but the ferry ride home calmed her down and we enjoyed looking at the harbour from the ferry and checking out all the gardens on the walk back to the apartment. We stayed with my brother for a cuppa, watching photos and videos of their recent trip to Thailand and Burma where they rode on elephants. They had great presents for the kids from their trip too, fans and soap for the girls and Burmese money for LiAM.

Monday, and the times either side of our outings on the other days, we spent at the house, playing with the kittens, playing on iPads, playing on the swings and trampoline, watching TV, sewing, dressing up in costumes (the girls did a photo shoot), making up dances and performing them for everyone, cooking (there were 2 batches of cupcakes made), playing Scrabble, and chatting and laughing.

Tuesday we all went to the zoo - it only took just over an hour to drive there (boys and Millie in my car, girls in the other car). We got there just after 10 and left when it closed at 4.30. We started the day with a round trip ride on the cable car - very cool seeing the animals from above, and looking at the view over the harbour. We saw most of the animals, and stopped to watch the bird show and the seal show, both of which were excellent. We sat in the splash zone for the seal show (front row) and got quite wet, which Millie was upset about - she snuggled on my lap under my jacket for the rest of the show and was happy then. We played in the playground next to the lemurs, and then in the playground at the farm part. Millie had another 2 bad falls and hurt her knee again - luckily this time I had my sling with me so she could snuggle on my back and it wasn't so hard for me to carry her. We ended the day with a ride up on the cable car, then had ice cream and my kids bought souvenirs (a snow globe type thing with penguins in it for Caitlin, a small plush lemur (so cute!) for LiAM, and a Schleich seal for Millie, to partner the one she got a few years ago). Back to the car and LiAM and Millie and I were exhausted and still not well and wanted to go straight home, so the boys and Millie and I did that, only hitting a small pocket of slow traffic. L and the girls went down to the beach near the zoo and had a wonderful evening before heading home and missing the traffic entirely.

Sydney Trip -> Day 4

More sewing, iPads, trampolining, running outside, dressing up, doing hair, Wii, and lots of chatting by L and I this morning. The girls curled Caitlin’s hair as she was going to watch C perform in Mary Poppins tonight. All the girls left around 2.30 with L to go to dancing and then on to the show, and (for those not going to the show) to hang out in a café and a place with chocolate fondue while the show was on. I stayed at home with the 3 boys, and had a very quiet afternoon – they played the Wii and the iPads, ran around outside for a while, watched TV, played with the kittens, and popped out every so often to ask for food.

Sydney Trip -> Day 2

We woke to a very cold frosty morning. Everyone was keen to get going so we could get to Sydney earlier, so we ate breakfast, the kids helped to pack and to tidy up the cabin, then went to play on the jumping pillow and playground while I finished packing the car.

We were on the road before 9.30, something I can’t remember happening before when we’ve been staying in paid accommodation. (I think everyone having their own bag makes packing much easier, rather than one bag with everyone’s clothes in it). It was still cold and frosty but a beautiful sunny morning and lovely to be driving. We listened to some They Might Be Giants, and then started an Audio Book ‘Atticus Claw Settles the Score’ – another book about a cat and it was hilarious and engaging.

By the time we approached Gundagai I needed petrol so we stopped at the Dog on the Tuckerbox to fill the car and stretch our legs. We had a play and bought some hot chips (and a hot drink for me) and ate them in the sun near the dog. We also bought a couple of bags of Batlow apples which were delicious.

We drove the last 3 hours to Sydney with only one extremely brief stop (I pulled over, ran around to the door where the food bags were, found the food that people wanted to eat, handed it out and then we kept going and ate in transit). We reached our friends’ house at around 3.45, which was 2-3 hours before they were expecting us, so a very pleasant surprise for them, and such a relief for my kids to finally be there. Even I had been not quite believing we were going to actually get away on this holiday, so it was so great to be with our friends and realize we’d made it.

I had a cup of tea with L, and the kids played inside and out – on the trampoline and swings and bikes, in the bedrooms, dressing up, on their iPads, with the kittens (5 kittens only 4 weeks old – so incredibly small and cute!!!). After a couple of hours the girls had to go out to a dancing/singing class. Caitlin went with them and was able to join in the class which she loved. Millie and the boys and I stayed home and they continued playing as they had before. We had Chinese for dinner once everyone was home, then negotiated who was going to sleep where. L and I went to bed before any of the kids, eventually they all took themselves off and fell asleep.
